The Future of Cybersecurity

About this session

Alain Sanchez, EMEA CISO in Fortinet's Office of the CISO, gives a practitioner-framed keynote on where cybersecurity is heading. He opens with a financial-sustainability argument for choosing a long-term vendor, then argues that security must become a holistic, natively integrated "fabric" or mesh rather than best-of-breed boxes glued together, since bought-together integration is now too slow and expensive. He identifies three new burdens reshaping the CISO role: compliance reporting, corporate social responsibility and sustainability commitments, and the human-talent shortage, noting 35 percent attrition among SOC and NOC staff doing manual correlation work. He gives concrete workforce advice: upskill internal staff rather than always hiring externally, recruit for science and math backgrounds, lead conversations with threat intelligence, and ask peers and vendors for help rather than reinventing integrations alone. He closes on OT/IT convergence, citing water utility, transportation and oil-and-gas examples, and urges CISOs to let operational strategic imperatives, not vendor roadmaps, drive purchasing decisions.

Key takeaways

  • Evaluate vendors' financial sustainability (revenue growth plus margin) before betting a security architecture on them long term.
  • Move away from best-of-breed point products toward a natively integrated security platform; manual, after-the-fact integration is too slow to keep pace with threats.
  • Automate correlation across telemetry sources so analysts stop doing manual log correlation, a leading cause of the 35 percent attrition seen in SOC and NOC teams.
  • When recruiting, prioritize science and math backgrounds and upskill existing network staff into cybersecurity roles instead of always hiring externally.
  • Anchor every budget or technology request in your organization's operational strategic imperatives, not a vendor's product roadmap.
