Frederic Bove, executive director of Prompt, opens the 17th GoSec conference and launches Quebec's renewed Cybersecurity Innovation Program, then hands off to a virtual Q&A with security expert and author Bruce Schneier, whose answers make up the bulk of the recording. A moderator reads questions gathered from the Quebec security community and Schneier responds. A recurring thread is that most security failures are economic, not technical: the market does not reward secure software, so the fix is regulation in a market large enough to move vendors worldwide. He argues the never-ending patch cycle will fail badly for the Internet of Things, that cryptographic math is strong while the real fight is the renewed crypto wars over backdoors and client-side scanning, and that AI systems face conventional attacks plus adversarial machine learning. On quantum computing he counsels calm, pointing to NIST's standardisation of quantum-resistant algorithms well before a working quantum computer exists. He also addresses the security skills gap, surveillance as the business model of the internet, and the need for a maturing industry to accept regulation. Bove closes by detailing the program's two funding tracks.

His favorite topics are cybersecurity and its challenges for businesses, governments, and individuals.
Bruce Schneier is a Fellow of the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University and lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is also a board member of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and IBM’s Chief Technology Officer and Special Advisor for Resilient Systems. In a dynamic conference format, Mr. Schneier will answer questions from stakeholders in the Quebec ecosystem. A must-to-attend kind of event!
