Francis Nadeau, co-founder and president of HydraLab, presents digital identity as the first pillar of any 'trust ecosystem', the layer that blockchain registries for land titles, diplomas, intellectual property or insurance need before they can be useful. He separates everyday digital identity (metadata, browsing traces) from a foundational identity anchored in a birth-certificate-like attribute rather than the social insurance number, which he considers compromised for too many Canadians. He compares hosting models (a wallet on a phone versus a physical card holding several attestations, which cannot support selective consent), argues for a multi-device approach for when the phone is lost or dead, and reduces blockchain to its essentials: a distributed encrypted database, hashing, consensus as an agreement on how to communicate, and smart contracts as automatable content. A worked example has a licensing authority sign the hash of a driver's licence so a police officer can later verify the raw data. He then covers W3C decentralised identifiers and the Trust over IP layers, and closes on the human obstacles: missing standards and skills among decision makers, siloed governance, interprovincial interoperability, recovery after a lost device, and the risk that wallets such as Facebook's Calibra turn convenience into mass surveillance.

Ces attestations numériques vérifiables sont donc rattachables à l’identité d’une personne, à l’identité d’un objet connecté, à l’identité d’un bâtiment intelligent, à l’identité d’une ville intelligente, à l’identité d’un réseau de neurones artificiels, etc.

Il occupait le rôle d’analyste blockchain pour le FintechLab, un observatoire sur les technologies financières. Avant de cofonder HydraLab, il a agi à titre d’analyste de produits pour Coveo, un chef de file dans la recherche intelligente.
